It was in the early 1960s that John Hoogsteder first began buying and selling paintings. Now, more than fortyfive years on, the family company of Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder is firmly established in The Hague. Besides taking part in numerous international projects, exhibitions featuring Dutch and Flemish 17th-century Old Master paintings are held each year.
John Hoogsteder moved to The Hague in 1967 and opened Galerie Hoogsteder at Surinamestraat 26. By then he had already begun to specialize in Dutch and Flemish art of the 17th century. In the following twenty years he built up the business, becoming a major international art dealer with contacts throughout the world. He sold paintings to museums and to private individuals - turning many occasional buyers into enthusiastic collectors. John Hoogsteder is the AVRO TV programme Tussen Kunst en Kitsch's expert in old masters.
John's son, Willem Jan, studied art history at Utrecht university and at the Courtauld Institute in London. In 1983 he set up with Otto Naumann as art dealers in New York under the name Hoogsteder-Naumann Ltd. Five years later, having lived in London and New York, he returned to Holland to open his own gallery in 1989.
In March 1991 father and son combined forces and moved to a magnificent building on Lange Vijverberg in The Hague. Today, Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder BV is an international company focusing on the purchase and sale of Dutch and Flemish Old Masters to both private clients and museums. The aim is to cover the entire market sector, with prices ranging from 25,000 euros to several millions.
