PRESS RELEASE The Hague, 1 February 2010
CONNOISSEURSHIP AT HOOGSTEDER & HOOGSTEDER
Without practice it can be hard to tell the difference between a good painting and a bad one. Connoisseurship enables an art lover to better appreciate a painting. Open House at the well-known Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder art gallery in The Hague offers visitors an opportunity to develop their connoisseurship. On Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March, a selection of fifty museum-standard Old Master paintings will be on display at Lange Vijverberg 15. Special texts beside each work reveal the artist's secrets and train the connoisseur's eye.
The Art of Observing
The actual subject is less important for the connoisseur.
The point is how the painter depicts that subject. The artist has
an idea, creates a composition in his head and then expresses it in
paints. The paint reveals the artist's skill. The composition shows
the painter's artistic inspiration. Recognising this skill and
artistic talent is what connoisseurship is about. It is the key to
enjoying art and it is essential for every art lover.
Knowledge, passion and quality
Willem Jan and John Hoogsteder have assembled fifty
paintings using their knowledge, passion and eye for quality. All
the genres are represented: marines, portraits, still lifes, genre
pieces, landscapes and city views. The Hoogsteders offer a glimpse
behind the scenes and show how they view art. All art lovers are
invited to come and admire these Old Master paintings on the
weekend of 6 and 7 March. The paintings are for sale. Prices vary
from €20,000 to over a million. Entry is free.
