Jacob Adriaensz. Backer (1608-1651)

This exquisite portrait of Geertruida Hasselaer (1624-1696) has
been signed in Jacob Backer's customary manner with the monogram
JAB. Both the painter and the provenance of this work are beyond
doubt.
The artist uses a sparkling colourism in which primary colours are
given free rein. Using broad vigorous brushstrokes and a thick
impasto Backer has beautifully captured the lustre and texture of
the glowing material.
