MATHIEU DUBUS
Flanders c. 1590 - 1665/1666 The Hague
Italian Mountain Landscape with River and Travellers
Panel, 39 x 50 cm
Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder, The Hague

Paintings by Dubus are rare these days; only eight are known. The light in this Mountain Landscape with River and Travellers has a southern feel and the hilltop village appears Italian. While it may be imagined that Dubus must have travelled in Southern Europe himself, this is certainly not the case. He based his paintings on sketches and pictures by other artists. In particular, on elements from works by Hercules Segers, like the fanciful rock formations.
