This elegant Portrait of a Gentleman was painted in 1660 by Jacob van Loo. In that same year Van Loo became embroiled in a fight with an innkeeper in Amsterdam. The dramatic turn of events forced the artist to flee to Paris. In the French capital he continued to work as a portrait painter for a further ten years.
