Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder, The Hague

Although two artists worked on this painting, it nevertheless forms a single entity. Van der Haagen kept the landscape close and dark below allowing the waterbirds to stand out all the more with their light plumage. A more detailed examination reveals that in addition to the woodland in the background, Van der Haagen also painted the grass in the foreground. His brushwork is loose and rapid. The reflection in the water is almost impressionistic. Dirck Wyntrack painted with greater precision but less spontaneity.
