Backhuyzen-8

Ludolf Backhuyzen was at the height of his success during his fourth marriage to Anna de Hooghe (1645-1717), a niece of the famous printmaker Romeyn de Hooghe. He married her in 1680; in 1683 their son Johannes was born. He is seated in the foreground of this group portrait, holding a pipe. The artist himself is the older man in the background. The woman in the centre is probably Anna de Hooghe, although she seems rather young for her 57 years. The other people in the picture are probably members of the De Hooghe family.
