The subsequent adhesive layer was removed, firstly using pure water, and then acid-free wheat starch paste. Instead of an original 17th-century canvas, a second lining canvas was now revealed, identical in weave structure to the first. This is not unusual: a double lining was often applied to add strength to a painting.
