It appears that Ships in a Storm had been restored before, around 80 to 100 years ago. This replacement lining canvas had now started to decompose. Since the bond between paint and priming was still sound, but apparently not between priming and canvas, it was decided to remove the relining to access the original canvas. Before starting the procedure it was necessary to protect the front of the painting. This was done by facing it with Japanese tissue.
