In the summer of 1850 a luxuriously bound edition of the auction catalogue was produced by W. Willems, a book dealer on Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam.

It contains an extensive description of Backhuyzen’s marine, adding that the work may be described as one of the master’s finest (ce tableau peut être regardé comme une des meilleures pièces de ce maître). In the margin, the king’s treasurer,
Count L. van Bylandt, made various notes. These are an important source of information for the buyers and prices realised at the auction.
