Private collection

Queen Anna Paulovna did not know that the art collection had been mortgaged to her brother, Tsar Nicholas, for one million guilders. To keep the scandal from becoming public, she offered the entire collection to him by private sale. ‘You have the power to save my family’s honour’, she wrote desperately. But her children felt little for this option and preferred to take their chances with a public auction.
