Zeelander

In 1848 a splendid edition containing 189 line engravings of the paintings in the royal collection appeared. The prints were presented in a box in the shape of a luxuriously bound gilt-edged book. Zeelander’s prints provide a highly simplified impression of the paintings, leaving out many details. In the case of the Backhuyzen, for example, this means that a crucial detail such as the broken mast is missing and there is no coast in the background. Little justice is done to the drama of the painting, since it is impossible to reproduce clair-obscur in this kind of print.
