GERARD DOU, A Woman Reading, known as Rembrandt's Mother
Panel, 71 x 55.5 cm. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

The paintings of Gerard Dou and his pupils are minutely and precisely painted. They used thin brushes and applied their paints in numerous, successive layers. The result was a polished surface, so smooth that it seemed almost enamelled: no brushstrokes are visible. The Leiden fijnschilders employed sharp contrasts of light and dark, often placing their subjects in a vaulted context. REMBRANDT
