Frans Hals employed a loose, almost Impressionist style. He painted his subjects with bold brushstrokes. Though rendered with only a few touches, his depiction of materials was masterly; delicate lighting, allows the figure to stand out from the background. The liveliness of Hals's depictions is unequalled, not least because he portrayed his subjects laughing. Judith Leyster probably came closest to understanding Hals's art, although she did not adopt his fabled technique. Hals also taught a succession of young artists, among them Jan Miense Molenaer, Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne and Palamedes Palamedesz. The work of Jan de Bray also has occasional Hals-like features, as evident in the painting in the exhibition.
