REMBRANDT, An Old Man. Canvas, 78.7 x 66 cm. Signed and dated, Rembrandt f. 1667. Mauritshuis The Hague, acquired 1999.

By illuminating his scenes with unusual light sources, Rembrandt was able to achieve dramatic effects. His use of paints differed from one work to the next, ranging from smooth and transparent to rough strokes of the brush. In some of his paintings, especially the later works, sections of thick paint are worked with a knife or the handle of the brush. The palette, originally bright and light, focused later on brown, red, ochre and green.
