Rembrandt depicts himself here as a famous painter. He is dressed in the fashionable attire of the 1520s and 1530s, and the composition is derived from Rafael's portrait of Baldassare Castiglione and Titian's portrait of Ariosto. Both these paintings were in Amsterdam around 1640.
