The painting Les Brisants de la Mer du Nord by H.W. Mesdag was acquired in 1999 by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in a donation from Johan Poort, founder of the Mesdag Documentatie Stichting. As a philanthropist and collector, Poort came out publicly against the proposed tax on art.

For the exhibition on Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, that ran until 22 May 2000 at the Mesdag Panorama in The Hague, Johan Poort leant no less than twenty works.
