Toorenvliet-5

In this picture Toorenvliet has used a finely balanced, albeit restricted, palette with yellow-gold, blue-grey and red alternating in a rhythmic cadenza. The composition is circular. The red curtain at the right, from behind which we see an uninvited guest thoughtfully observing the banquet, brings a theatrical effect to the depiction. It is conspicuous that only the master of the house is drinking wine, holding a façon de Venise wine glass by the foot. An empty bottle lies discarded on the groud, while a woman is taking a large square wine bottle from the cooler.
